Just North of Plum City, Elmwood came to life in the 1870's. Lumber milling was a major industry with giant hardwoods and elm trees covering the land around Norweigen Hill. Many looging camps and mills sprung up in the the area and the first saw mill was located on the scenic Cady Creek. Essential to the limber industry success was the nearby deep and swift moving Eau Galle River.
As a testament to the logging heritage, stands a log house built by Otis Hutchins in 1870. It's located across the street from the Catholic Church on Public Ave.
Some 100 years later, in the 1970's, several well documented and substanciated UFO sightings drew worldwide attention to the Elmwood coulee. Media reporters soon dubbed the town, "The UFO capital of the World" Elmwood locals decided to have some fun with this. So now Elmwood residents and guests celebrate "UFO Days". This is held during the last weekend of July.
Elmwood celebrated their 100 anniversary in 2005, stating the creation of the community was in 1905.
I do not know how valid this may be, but the information I found does state differantly.
Note- Kris Talford took a few photo's in the mid 2003 year, that ended up with images of UFO's in both. these pictures where viewed by local officials and determined to be unexplained.
More evidence of the unknown of the small community , nestled in the valley of western Wisconsin.
