Nascar 2012 - Race Nine

Submitted by Rick A. Talford

RICHMOND, VA - Friday night, under the lights was the Nationwide race. 250 laps on the ¾ mile track. # 33 Kevin Harvick took the pole for the race, and dominated a good part of it. He came up just short finishing in third place. Moto-Cross racer Travis Pastrana started his first race of his Nationwide career, finishing in twenty second place, one spot behind Danica Patrick. They both were two laps down at the races end. Eighteen year old Ryan Blaney also started his first race of his career. Ryan is the son of well known driver, Dave Blaney.
The first caution of the race came on lap 24 for debris. The second caution came out on lap 115, when # 23 Richardson spun out # 81 Bowles. During the round of pit stops, # 18 Denny Hamlin missed his pit box, dropping him from third to twenty-fourth.
Lap 156, # 54 Kurt Busch (driving for younger brother Kyle) took the lead from Harvick. During a round of green flag pit stops, several drivers (including Pastrana) were caught speeding. They were all forced to make a drive through of pit road for the penalty.
The final lap was completed with # 54 Kurt Busch bringing home the very first win for Kyle Busch Motorsports. The rest of the top ten were as follows: # 18 Denny Hamlin (Toyota), # 33 Kevin Harvick (Chevy), # 6 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (ford), # 12 Sam Hornish Jr. (dodge), # 2 Elliott Sadler (chevy), # 136 Ryan Blaney (chevy), # 43 Michael Annett (ford), # 3 Austin Dillon (chevy), and # 38 Kasey Kahne (chevy).
Next race will be on Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway, starting at 2 PM.
Saturday Nights Cup race was 400 laps under the lights. Fifty-three year old Mark Martin took his fifty-third pole of his career in the series. It was thirty-one years ago, that Martin took his very first pole award. Kyle Busch would be racing tonight for the chance of making it four in a row, winning this race in the spring. The track celebrated sixty years of racing as well. Before the race could begin, there were issues with the lights, that needed fixing before they could drop the green flag.
# 55 Mark Martin would lead the first twenty-nine laps, before # 99 Carl Edwards would take over and dominate the nights race. On lap fifty, NASCAR threw a yellow flag as a competition caution, due to the track was washed off during the day from rain showers. The restart created some drama, as # 43 Aric Almirola ran into # 24 Jeff Gordon. Gordon then ran into # 16 Greg Biffle and # 51 Kurt Busch. Only Gordon would end up with damage, taking his chevy to pit road for a sliced tire. This put Gordon a couple laps down. Lap 117 # 51 Busch spun out all by himself, bringing out the second caution of the night. During the pit stops, # 27 Paul Menards team had a tire get away from them, causing them to be penalized. They would have to restart at the back of the field. On lap 201 # 14 Tony Stewart would take the lead away from Edwards. Just prior to this, the green flag pit stops had begun. During the stops, # 29 Kevin Harvick would take over the lead of the race. While racing through the field, Harvick ran up on a car that was four laps down. # 36 Dave Blaney raced Harvick hard and even got into the side of his car. Before Harvick could get his car back up to speed, Edwards went back past him to re-take the lead.
Lap 227 had another caution for the phantom debris. (debris that was never shown to the fans) The race ran green for quite a while, with Stewart and # 18 Kyle Busch each taking the lead for a short time. Lap 310 # 31 Jeff Burton hit the wall and brought out the fourth caution of the race. During the pit stops, # 48 Jimmie Johnsons team rolled a tire from the car back to the pit wall. This is a violation of the rules, so he was penalized by going to the back of the longest line. He would restart in the thirty-sixth position. The re-start on lap 315 brought some controversy with it. # 99 Carl Edwards appeared to have jumped the restart, as # 14 Tony Stewart was the leader of the race, he was suppose to lead the pack back to the start-finish line. With no caution, Edwards was forced to make a drive through of pit road as a penalty, dropping him from the front row to becoming a lap down car.
The fifth and final caution came out on lap 386 for once again, phantom debris. Stewart had a four second lead over Kyle Busch at this time, and had it erased after NASCAR called for the debris caution. With under ten laps remaining, Busch and the rest of the field made another pit stop, and Busch came out the leader. Edwards would get the “Lucky Dog” and returned to the lead lap in fifteenth spot. After another bad restart by Stewart (four out of five restarts, Stewart spun his tires) , # 18 Kyle Busch (Toyota) would race to his “Fourth” Richmond Spring Race Victory. The rest of the top ten were: # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Chevy), # 14 Tony Stewart (Chevy), # 11 Denny Hamlin (Toyota), # 5 Kasey Kahne (Chevy), # 48 Jimmie Johnson (Chevy), # 15 Clint Bowyer (Toyota), # 55 Mark Martin (Toyota), # 2 Brad Keselowski (Dodge), and # 99 Carl Edwards (Ford). Wisconsin natives # 17 Matt Kenseth (Ford) and # 27 Paul Menard (Chevy) would finish in eleventh and thirteenth positions.
The next race for the cup series will be held next Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, starting at noon.

Kansas City Racing

KANSAS CITY, KS - NASCAR’s eighth race of the season was held at the one and a half mile track on “Earth Day.” The “STP 400” was 266 laps of racing. The Pole Winner was # 22 AJ Allmindinger, with @# 29 Kevin Harvick starting beside him. The temperature at the track was in the low fifties, with winds from fifteen to thirty miles per hour. Only one car had to go to the rear after qualifying well, that was # 20 Joey Lagono. He qualified in the third spot, but had engine troubles immediately. This would be the final race held at the track, before it gets a new surface.
The first caution of the race, came at lap 52. # 15 Clint Bowyer was attempting to hit pit road, when his car spun out at the entrance. He was trying to get to pit lane, due to feeling the car was down a cylinder. He eventually did take the car to the garage for repairs, and did return to the race. While the second round of pit stops was ready to begin, # 29 Kevin Harvick, as well as # 5 Kasey Kahne both ran out of fuel before they could make their stops. Both stayed on the lead lap however after the rest of the field made their stops. On lap 132, a second caution flew for debris on the race track. The pole winner had engine troubles during the pit stop. Bobbie Labonte’s # 47 also blew and engine during the caution. Before the green flag would fly again, the # 15 Clint Bowyer cars engine let go, retiring him from the race. Lap 189 would bring out the third and final caution of the race, when # 42 Jaun Montoya ran up the track and scraped the wall. There would only be 18 laps of caution for the race, leaving the race to have another record pace of over 140 mph average.
With only 30 laps remaining in the race, # 51 Kurt Busch and # 24 Jeff Gordon both began having engine failures, taking them out of contention for the win. The sun began to peak out, causing the # 56 Martin Truex Jr’s car to slow just enough for # 11 Denny Hamlin to get around him for the lead. Truex Jr. had dominated the entire race after taking the lead from Allmindinger, after only 43 laps were run. Mark Martin’s # 55 Toyota then had engine troubles with just nine laps left.
The Top Ten ended with Hamlin (Toyota) in Victory Lane, Truex Jr. (Toyota) second place, #48 Jimmie Johnson (Chevy), # 17 Matt Kenseth (Ford), # 16 Greg Biffle (Ford-current points leader), # 29 Kevin Harvick (Chevy), # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Chevy), # 5 Kasey Kahne (Chevy), #99 Carl Edwards (Ford), and # 18 Kyle Busch (Toyota). The highest placing Dodge was eleventh place # 2 Brad Keselowski. Next weeks race will be held on Saturday Night at Richmond, Virginia.

ELMWOOD, WI - Monday, April 9, 2012 was the monthly meeting at the Elmwood Auditorium for the Village Board. All members of the board were present. Newly elected Trustee Susan Dzubay was not present for this meeting. Angela Popenhagen (Stevens Engineering), Gary Sweeney and Tim Stockwell (Forth Engineering) were also present.
The Winter Avenue Project and Finance Approval were spoken about first at this months meeting. Trustee Bruce Hartung spoke to the members of the board. He felt there was not sufficient revenue for the go ahead on this project, and requested that it be tabled until further investigating could be done, in regards to the financing of the project. At this time, the Winter Avenue Project has been tabled, and was not approved to begin.
The Sewer Facility Plan Assessment and Grant Approval was then discussed. It was noted that there would not be anything done until after the “Design Phase”, and that would be sometime in 2013. Trustee Neil Boltik requested the board go ahead and start the assessment, and get grants through the USDA-RD program to pay for it. The “Go Ahead” was approved.
The Spring Election was next on the agenda. Out of 480 possible voters in Elmwood, 170 showed up and voted on Election Day. Incumbents Rick Stohr and Trisha Knops received votes to remain on the board. Former board trustee Susan Dzubay, also received enough votes to get back onto the board. Trustee Knops did not file the initial paperwork, but did run as a write-in candidate. Trustee Bruce Hartung did not run for re-election, so this would be his last meeting attended, as a member of the board.
The Spring Clean-up was scheduled for the week of April 16-20. Any questions on what can be discarded, please contact the village clerk at 715-639-3792.
In Committee and Board Reports, Knops provided the report from the Nursing Home. Nascar 2012 - Race Six
NASCAR 2012 - “Martinsville Madness”
Martinsville, VA. On April 1, 2012. This was race number six of the thirty-six race season. A short ½ mile track, shaped like a paper-clip. 500 laps were scheduled for the race. 5 Kasey Kahne took his second consecutive pole of the season for this race. One interesting note on this race, was the cost for the brake systems on every race car. $40,000.00 for each car. Fifteen time winner of this race, Richard Petty was the Grand Marshall.
29 Kevin Harvick, driving a special paint scheme for the “End of Prohibition” started second when the green flag flew, and quickly took the lead for the first twenty-one laps, then faded with handling troubles and finished nineteenth (two laps down). Harvick also dominated the Truck Race the day before at Martinsville, taking the victory after leading three-quarters of the race.
Early on in the race, 51 Kurt Busch blew a right front tire, and went four laps down getting that repaired. On Lap 98 his brother 18 Kyle Busch broke a part in the rear end, causing his Toyota to slide up the track and into the wall. Both the rear end and the front end received damages in this first caution of the race. Kyle would go to the garage and did return some seventy plus laps later. During the first caution, 39 Ryan Newman and 48 Jimmie Johnson were both caught speeding entering and leaving pit road. Both drivers went to the back of the longest line for the re-start. Lap 205 51 K. Busch again blew a right front tire, and was able to get off track without a caution. About the same time 10 David Reutimann also had a front tire go down, and was able to get off track.
By lap 225, leader 24 Jeff Gordon was knocking cars off the lead lap at a good pace. At this point, there were only thirteen cars left on the lead lap. Gordon had taken the lead for Harvick at lap 22, and was holding the lead from that point on. On lap 230 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the lead from his teammate Gordon, as the fans showed their excitement with a loud roar around the track. On lap 240 5 Kahne started to have engine troubles after staying in the top five most of the race. He went a lap down after starting on the pole, and never leading a single lap in the race.
Lap 245 had 36 Dave Blaney spinning backwards into the wall and bringing out the second caution of the day. Lap 264 42 Jaun Montoya made contact with another car lightly, and spun out. This brought out the third caution. Caution four was on lap 318 for 5 Kahne whose engine finally expired. At this point, 24 Jeff Gordon had led 288 laps. During the caution, 2 Brad Keselowski tried to beat Earnhardt Jr. off of pit road and was caught speeding. This sent him to the back of the field. Lap 350 another Hendrick driver took the lead. 48 Jimmie Johnson had gotten to the front after being penalized earlier on in the race for speeding on pit road. Lap 361 was caution number five. 93 Travis Kvapil blew a tire and spun up and into the wall. During a round of green flag stops, 27 Paul Menard was caught speeding and had to make a drive through on pit road for the penalty.
Lap 497 of the 500 laps, 10 Reutimann decided to stop his car on track, after loosing his breaks many laps prior. He decided to not go into the pits numerous times before he came to a complete stop on track, bringing out caution number six. Nascar Officials were not happy with this move, and called the driver to the Nascar Hauler after the completion of the race. At this point, Hendrick teammates Gordon, Johnson, and Earnhardt Jr. were lined up first to third. If Hendrick could win this race, he would have his 200th victory in Cup Series. On the re-start 39 Ryan Newman decided to ram the back end of 15 Clint Bowyer while entering the first corner. This caused a pile up of all the leaders, taking Gordon, Johnson, Keselowski all out of contention for the win. The race then went to overtime, making it another Green-White-Checkered Race. Newman had gotten past the mess he created, and re-started first. He held off 22 Allmindinger and the damaged 88 Earnhardt Jr. for the victory. There were less than a dozen cars left on the lead lap, giving Gordon, Bowyer and Keselowski the chance to finish in the top ten. Johnson then finished twelfth position. There were many drivers that had bad attitudes after this race, due to the actions of Reutimann and Newman. Newman’s car is owned by Tony Stewart, giving Stewart-Hass their third win in six races so far this season.
The next race will be held on April 14th at the Texas Speedway. This will be a Saturday night race.
NOTE- Previous winners this season in the Cup Series have been, Daytona, FL. (17 Matt Kenseth), Phoenix, AZ (11 Denny Hamlin), Las Vegas, NV (14 Tony Stewart), and last week at Bristol, TN (2 Brad Keselowski).

Nascar 2012 - Race Five
NASCAR 2012 - “California Sun”
California Super-speedway was the location of the fifth race of the season for the Cup Series on March 25, 2012. The race was scheduled for 200 laps on the two mile track. Until a rain caution came out about lap 125, the race ran green.
There were many pit road violations during the three green flag stops throughout the first 125 laps. 24 Jeff Gordon had a penalty for taking equipment out of the pit box. He drug the gasman and the gas can from his pit while leaving during one of his stops. The penalty for this is a complete stop in his pit a second time. 17 Matt Kenseth also suffered from a tire leaving his pit, when he left after completing a stop on pit road. Several drivers were forced to drive though pit road a second time, for speeding while entering and leaving pit road, while making there stops.
When the rains came, 14 Tony Stewart faked going into pit road, and 11 Denny Hamlin followed him in, while Stewart then darted back onto the track. Hamlin was one of the only lead cars to make the stop, while the rest of the field stayed on track. 18 Kyle Busch, 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr., 29 Kevin Harvick, and 99 Carl Edwards completed the top five.
The rains became too much for the track to be dried in time to finish the final laps, so 14 Tony Stewart was awarded the victory, when Nascar ended the race short of the 200 laps scheduled. This was Stewarts second win in three races.
NOTE- Joey Lagono won the Nationwide race on Saturday at thee same track. Previous winners for the Nationwide Series so far this season were, Daytona, FL. (James Buescher), Phoenix, AZ. (Elliott Sadler), Las Vegas, NV (Ricky Stenhouse Jr.), and Bristol, TN (Elliott Sadler).

ELMWOOD, WI - Monday March 12, 2012 was the Elmwood Village Board Meeting, held at the village auditorium. All members of the board were present at the meetings start, except Trustee Neil Boltic (who arrived late). The Library Trustees (Sandra Weix, Dan Flory, Kathy Miller, and Wayne Nohelty) all attended this meeting as well.
In Public Input, Natalie Ginsbach spoke to the board about the possibility of having a March of Dimes Fundraiser-Walk in June 2012. Resident Marty Reiner provided an update about the upcoming Memorial Day Dedication at the newly renovated Veterans Park. He requested that the village close off the street for the event, and also turn on the water to the old fire-hall building. The request was going to be referred to the Public Works Committee for consideration. Mr. Reiner then asked about the boundaries for the Legion, at Veterans Park. This was referred to the Public Works Committee for answers.
Operators Licenses were approved for Nicholas Zopp and Kelsie Nygren at the local Cenex station. The Village then received a report from the Village Assessor. Bob Irwin provided information to the members, that the village property sales were down thirty to thirty-six percent on older properties. He then stated “Fifteen percent drop on other properties.” There will be a mill rate adjustment at the end of the year, as he will keep track of the changes going forward.
The local USDA-Rural Development had a few representatives at the meeting to discuss the future sewer plant changes that are being looked at. Susan Larson and Nate Billinghurst (USDA-RD) provided information to the board members about the needed plans to go forward with a new plant, and the grants that will be needed to help construct it. Tim Stockwell from FOTH, also spoke to the members about the specifics of a new plant.
In Committee and Board Reports, the Library Committee was to be holding a meeting on March 13. Trustee Trisha Knops, provided information from the Nursing Home Committee. A meeting was scheduled for March 13, and there was no meeting held in February. She also stated “Janelle Asher was hired for the Director of Nursing position.” The Personnel and Finance Committee met prior to the board meeting, and accepted Schuler Insurance to continue coverage for all the village needs. The Public Works Committee Trustee, Mike Sand then spoke to the board. The committee met on March 9, and decided to do a complete re-construction of Winter Ave., and all citizens that are not currently connected to the village system will be contacted by letter, to inform them of the upcoming work and changes. There were no meetings for the Police or Parks and Building Committees. The regular board meeting then adjourned at 7:59 pm.
A “Closed Session Meeting” was then held with the Library Trustees, from 7:59 to 9:18 PM. The Library Committee President Sandra Weix, then brought the meeting to order. Village Trustee Brian Buck made a motion to make Village President Bill Stewart the Chair of this meeting. Trustee Neil Boltic provided the second. Trustee Neil Boltic then made a motion to make Village Clerk Amy Wayne the Clerk for this meeting, and Buck provided the second. There was no information provided to the public in regards to the reason for this meeting, nor was any information released after the meeting returned into “Open Session.”
If anyone would like an explanation on this meeting, they will need to contact the Elmwood Village Office Clerk. By state regulations, there should have been a description listed for the reasoning of a closed session meeting. I was not provided any reasons in the minutes I received from the village.
Update -4/2/12- I was contacted by the Village Clerk and provided a copy of the Agenda for this meeting. On the Agenda it was noted the closed session was a specific personnel issue that if made public could create an adverse affect to a person or persons reputation if named. This is under section 19.85(1)(f). Also it was noted that the session was also for consideration over a performance evaluation of which the board has jurisdiction over per Section 19.85(1)(c).
