BRISTOL, TENNESSEE - Nationwide Series drivers tightened their belts up real good for “Thunder Valley”. 250 laps on the fastest half mile motor speedway. During pre-race ceremonies, Woman’s College Basketball Coach Pat Summit was the Grand Marshal. She has had a stellar career, winning over 1,000 times. In this span she won Eight Championships, and her girls had a 100% graduation rate. A special paint scheme was on Trevor Bayne’s # 60 race car. Solid orange, with the words “We Back Pat” written on the hood. Trint Callison, from the armed forces provided the “Pledge of Allegiance”. Mike Rife provided the Invocation, and Frances Kness sang the National Anthem. A KC-135 re-fueling aircraft flew over as well. The race was late getting started due to a rain storm that moved through the area shortly before the races scheduled time. A “Competition Caution” was scheduled for lap 50. The Pole Sitter was # 60 Trevor Bayne, with # 18 Joey Lagono starting second.

A caution flew on lap 5 for # 31 Justin Allgaier hitting the wall. Before the yellow actually was shown, Allgaier hit the wall a second time. On lap 28 # 22 Brad Keselowski was spun out by # 11 Brian Scott. This was caused partly by a lap car of # 4 Brad Teague being in the way, causing Keselowski to check up in front of Scott. Another caution flew for debris off of Allgaier race car on lap 31, as he hit the wall a third time. Caution number four was for # 81 Jason Bowles hitting the inside wall. Scott would then be spun out by # 54 Kyle Busch on lap 63 for caution number five. On lap 109 the sixth caution flew for # 41 Fain Skinner spinning out on track. Another caution came out on lap 170 for a spin out by # 24 Benny Gordon.

Caution number eight was for # 99 John Wes Townsley on lap 225, when the center of his tire broke away. He then ran into the wall with extra force. During this caution # 33 Kevin Harvick ran out of fuel, after leading the most laps of the race. The ninth and final caution came on lap 240, when # 3 Austin Dillon took # 60 Trevor Bayne into the wall. # 38 Kasey Kahne also spun out.

The final laps had # 18 Joey Lagono out front and walking away to win his sixth race of the year in the series. # 6 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished second. The rest of the top ten were: # 54 Kyle Busch, # 3 Austin Dillon, # 2 Elliott Sadler, # 88 Cole Whitt, # 36 Ryan Blaney, # 43 Michael Annett, # 7 Danica Patrick and # 12 Sam Hornish Jr.

A Patrick note- Danica started 34th and moved her way forward throughout the race, missing multiple wrecks in front of her. Mid-race, She then was penalized for speeding on pit road, and went to the rear of the longest line as the result. She then worked her way back up inside the top ten, where she finished the race.

The next race will be Saturday night in Atlanta, Georgia.

SHARPIES 500

BRISTOL, TENNESSEE - The Cup drivers were ready for 500 laps in the Coliseum. The race was Saturday night, “Under the Lights”. Qualifying was rained out, so the field was set by their first practice session. # 13 Casey Mears and # 2 Brad Keselowski started on the front row. Keselowski’s car had a retro paint scheme from retired-driver Rusty Wallace’s last victory at Bristol in 2000. This was to celebrate his Nine victories at the track. Darrell Waltrip had the most wins at Bristol in his career, a whopping twelve wins. Waltrip even won seven straight at the famous track. Danica Patrick would start her very first cup race at Bristol on this evening, in her Stewart-Hass # 10. Michael Buffer was the announcer and Grand Marshal for the race, calling for the fans to “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble”. Trent Callison provided the “Pledge of Allegiance”. Driver Michael McDowell provided the Invocation. The Motor Outreach Children sang the National Anthem, while two T-45’s flew over the track. There was even a special pace car driver for the race. Actor Jason Clark, from the upcoming “Lawless” program drove.

It did not take long for the first caution to fly in the race. On lap 10, # 32 Ken Schrader was ran into by # 49 Jason Leffler, sending Schrader into the inside wall. The second caution was on lap 82 for debris, as # 22 Sam Hornish Jr. had tagged the wall. At the same time, # 17 Matt Kenseth was off pace with break issues. During the incident both # 48 Jimmie Johnson and # 51 Kurt Busch received minor damages to their cars. During the pit stops, # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. and # 18 Kyle Busch received speeding penalties, while # 39 Ryan Newman was penalized for taking equipment out of the pit box. All three would start at the rear of the field. Kurt Busch would be involved in the next caution on lap 120, when # 34 David Ragan would run into and spin out Hornish Jr. Ragan would be the reason for the fourth caution, as he rear ended another car, and broke an oil line that started a fire under his car. The fifth caution flew for # 42 Jaun Montoya spinning out # 39 Ryan Newman. # 31 Jeff Burton would get collected up in the mess, as he ran into the sliding car of Newman. Newman’s car was heavily damaged, and would not return to the race. Another caution came out on lap 225, when # 38 David Gilliland sent # 43 Aric Almirola into the wall.

On lap 270, the seventh caution came out for # 2 Brad Keselowski, as he was hit and spun out by # 47 Bobby Labonte. Number eight was for # 78 Regan Smith and # 51 Kurt Busch, as they tangled and spun out. The biggest excitement and wreck happened on lap 330, when # 17 Matt Kenseth decided to get over aggressive with # 14 Tony Stewart. Kenseth was passed by Stewart, then he decided to drive in hard next to Stewart to force a pass. The two got together and slid sideways into the inside wall. Stewart was just a little miffed at Kenseth’s actions. While Kenseth was still able to drive around the race track, Stewart stood and waited for him. Stewart showed his dismay towards Kenseth with his helmet flying through the air, hitting Kenseth’s race car dead center of the grill. The helmet flew straight up in the air and fell to the ground, as the entire coliseum erupted in cheer. After being released from the infield care center, Stewart added a few words of warning to Kenseth for future races. After the race, Kenseth claimed past race issues were the reasons he took the action he did at Bristol. This could become a costly feud for both in the upcoming “Chase for the Championship”.

On lap 348, # 36 Dave Blaney had an engine fail, as he blew lots of smoke out the rear of the car. Caution number eleven came out on lap 412 for a blown tire on # 13 Casey Mears. # 78 Regan Smith also bounced off him in the incident. Another debris caution flew on lap 422, after # 16 Greg Biffle got into the back of Smith’s car, causing a part to fall off on track. The thirteenth and final caution came out on lap 435, when # 10 Danica Patrick was ran into and spun into the inside wall by REGAN SMITH. She had ran a great race in her first Bristol Cup race, until she was ran into by Smith. Patrick was nineteenth at the time, still on the lead lap. She would finish 29th for the race. All three Stewart-Hass race cars were damaged in the race, with Stewart being the only one still running on track at the end. He was many laps down after the incident with Kenseth.

Carl Edwards would take the lead in his # 99 Ford, but was not able to hold on for victory, as he started falling back due to tire wearing and eventually he ran out of gas with five laps remaining. # 11 Denny Hamlin would be the driver to get past Edwards first, and go onto win the race for the first time in his cup career. His chance at victory looked pretty well over, after he was hit in the front tire by a sliding cart on pt road during a pit stop on lap 85. No serious damage was done, and he seemed to be faster after the incident. # 48 Jimmie Johnson finished second, and teammate # 24 Jeff Gordon third.

The rest of the top ten were: # 55 Brian Vickers, # 9 Marcus Ambrose, # 18 Kyle Busch, # 15 Clint Bowyer, # 20 Joey Lagono, # 5 Kasey Kahne and # 27 Paul Menard. Dale Earnhardt Jr. would finish in 12th.

Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are now locked in to the “Chase“, after this race.

The next race is in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday night at 6:30 PM on ESPN.

NOTE- A sad report was heard after the race finished. American Pioneer in Space, Neil Armstrong died at the age of 82 today. He was the first man to step on the moon in July 1969.

Nascar 2012 - race 23

NAPA AUTO PARTS 250

CIRCUIT GILLES-VILLENUEVE

QUEBEC, MONTREAL - The Nationwide Series went “North of the Border” this weekend for another road course race. A 74 lap race was run on the 2.7 mile race track. An average of 16 shifts are needed to get around the 14 corners. As Mary Lou sang both the Canadian and American National Anthem, two CF-18 from the Canadian Royal Air Force flew over. Robert Hattem was the Grand Marshal. Pole Sitter was # 30 Alex Tagliani, with # 12 Sam Hornish Jr. starting second. The top four starters in this race come from “Open Wheel” racing. Tagliani, Hornish Jr., Patrick and Villenueve.

After a miserable start at last weekends road course, Danica Patrick started fourth and stayed up front for a majority of the race. She even took the lead for twenty laps, before mechanical failures took her out of contention, after a shoe was thrown on the track. Patrick hit dead center of the race car, and soon after her problems began. While attempting to stay on the lead lap and in contention, it was found that a broken axle was to blame for her demise. A support bracket fell off the car just a few laps after hitting the shoe.

Many different pit strategies were ran, but in the end that didn’t make a difference. A local favorite, that was racing to give half of his winnings to a Canadian Children’s Hospital had early troubles. # 99 Patrick Carpentier had brake issues that became more of a problem then first thought. He would continue racing, but was several laps down after repairs. The first caution came out on lap 19 for # 23 Dexter Stacey. # 24 Eric McClure also stalled on track at the same time as Stacey went off track. The second caution came on lap 24 for # 41 Timmy Hill, when his engine failed and he stopped on track. Caution three was for Stacey a second time, after a tire blew and he hit the wall.

On lap 39 an idiot decided to throw a shoe over the fence and onto the racetrack just in front of the leaders. It was hit by Patrick, and her day started going downhill from there. The person that threw the shoe was not seen by the cameras in the area. This was one of Patrick’s better showings, as she led twenty laps before troubles took her out of contention. On lap 43, another caution flew for debris on the track.

Laps 54 and 55 seen two of Dale Earnhardt’s three entries go behind the wall for repairs, # 88 Cole Whitt and # 7 Danica Patrick. On lap 59 # 81 Jason Bowles spun off the track and into the sand. This brought out caution number five. Patrick would return to the track, five laps down on lap 60. On the restart, it was demolition time. While attempting to take the lead, # 30 Alex Tagliani ran over and through a few cars, starting a chain reaction. The car driven by # 59 Kyle Kelly ran into # 7 Patrick, # 01 Mike Wallace and # 12 Sam Hornish Jr. Shortly after # 54 Kyle Busch spun out # 5 Ron Fellows. Fellows car would not re-fire.

Tagliani and # 22 Jacque Villenueve would tangle. Villenueve would get to the rear, and spin out Tagliani and keep on racing to take the lead on lap 66. On lap 70 the sixth caution flew for # 01 Mike Wallace spinning out. This would be the start of two overtime attempts to complete the race. On the restart, Jeremy Clements, Alex Tagliani (spun out) and Kyle Busch would blow a tire, bringing out another caution. On the first Green-White-Checkered attempt, # 6 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. would spin out, and# 87 Alex Kennedy would as well. # 54 Busch spun out # 24 Eric McClure in the same area, bringing the caution out again. The second GWC would be the last as # 31 Justin Allgaier would do a bump and run on Villenueve. He would then go onto victory, only leading the final lap at the checkered flag.

The rest of the top ten were: # 12 Sam Hornish Jr., # 22 Jacque Villenueve, # 2 Elliott Sadler, # 5 Ron Fellows, # 18 Michael McDowell, # 01 Mike Wallace, # 60 Bobby Johnson, # 3 Austin Dillon and # 54 Kyle Busch.

The next race is on Friday night at Bristol.

NOTE- Nelson Piquet Jr. won the Truck race at Michigan last night, making the Turner Team 2-0 for the weekend so far. They will attempt a sweep with the Michigan race on Sunday.

PURE MICHIGAN 400

BROOKLYN, MICHIGAN - The Sprint Cup Series arrived in Brooklyn to race a 200 lap race on the 2 mile speedway. The opening ceremonies had Geoff Roses provide the invocation. Jason Young sang the National Anthem, while 3 jets flew overhead. Kid Rock was the Grand Marshal. The Pole Sitter was 53 year old Mark Martin in his 55th Career Pole. He would be driving the # 55 Michael Waltrip Racing car. Martin qualified at 199.706 mph.

A quick caution flew on lap 6 for # 38 David Gilliland spinning out. Mark Martin led 54 of the first 64 laps, before he was involved in a strange crash. He ran up on # 47 Bobby Labonte getting loose after # 42 Jaun Montoya got close enough, to take the air off the rear of his car. As Labonte started sliding sideways, Martin caught up to the two very fast. While attempting to check up, # 5 Kasey Kahne tagged him, and sent Martin’s car sliding down the track on onto pit road. Martin’s car then turned sideways and smashed into a pit wall, slicing into the car just behind the drivers seat. The car was destroyed, but Mark was able to get out unhurt. His day came to an end, after having the most dominant car on the track. At one point the had a five second lead. This accident brought out the second caution of the race. After the restart on lap 74, Martin’s teammate # 15 Clint Bowyer took over the lead.

A third caution came out on lap 76 for # 78 Regan Smith, who was spun out by # 9 Marcus Ambrose. The fourth caution came out after contact between # 42 Jaun Montoya and # 20 Joey Lagono had got together, sending Lagono into the wall. Lagono then hit the wall a second time before the yellow flag was shown on lap 89. The restart was a little wild, with # 56 Martin Truex Jr. (third MWR car) taking the lead. On lap 95 # 24 Jeff Gordon started having engine issues that sent him to the garage. A broken valve spring was the cause. He would return to the race 31 laps down. # 14 Tony Stewart went down a lap on lap 61 for the same reason, in his Hendrick Engine. # 1 Jamie McMurray’s day also went bad, as he blew out a tire on lap 98. This did not bring out a caution.

After crashing his car in the last practice session, and starting 42nd, # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. took over the lead on lap 115 with his backup car. He would lead for 25 laps on the day. The fifth caution flew for # 51 Kurt Busch, who hit the wall hard. Another caution came out on lap 143 for # 42 Jaun Montoya having a tire blow out on track. Both the last two restarts were controlled by Earnhardt, easily keeping the lead. On lap 149, # 17 Matt Kenseth had a tire issue that sent him to the pits. Shortly after, # 48 Jimmie Johnson took over the lead. While trying to keep earning points, Stewart was able to keep racing, until a black flagged sent him to the garage for the day on lap 168. He was unable to keep up a minimum speed on the speedway.

The seventh caution flew for # 21 Trevor Bayne hitting the wall, after his tire blew out. # 2 Brad Keselowski would take over the lead at the restart. With ten laps remaining, Johnson retook the lead, and looked to be headed to victory lane. This was not to be, as another Hendrick engine failed, sending Johnson to the hauler. The race would finish under the Green-White-Checkered rules.

Keselowski and # 16 Greg Biffle would restart on the front row. With a great push from # 88 Earnhardt, Biffle was able to jump out front and take it to victory lane. # 2 Brad Keselowski would finish second.

The rest of the top ten were: # 5 Kasey Kahne, # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr., # 9 Marcus Ambrose, # 99 Carl Edwards, # 15 Clint bowyer, # 39 Ryan Newman, # 27 Paul Menard and # 56 Martin Truex Jr. With the victory, Biffle becomes the new points leader over teammate Matt Kenseth by twenty points. Earnhardt Jr. is now in third place.

The next race is Saturday night at 7 PM at Bristol.

August 2012 Elmwood Village Board Report

Project Appleseed coming to Elmwood

Submitted by Rick A. Talford

Citizen Journalist

ELMWOOD, WI - The Elmwood Village Board met on Monday evening, August 13th at the Auditorium. Trustee Mike Sand was absent. The meeting began at 6:55 PM. In public input, Trustee Neil Boltic spoke to the members of the board. He discussed an upcoming “Conceal and Carry Class” that will be held at the Rod and Gun Club. The Revolutionary War Veterans will be giving a class called “Project Appleseed” This is a class that will provide historical information, as well as a marksmanship qualifying. If a person reaches a score of 210, they will receive a patch. The fee is $70.00 for adult males, $10.00 for females and $5.00 for kids. September 22nd and 23rd are the scheduled dates for the event. You may contact the Rod and Gun Club or go online for tickets. It was suggested that you not get your tickets by mailing, due to it takes six to eight weeks for processing an order.

The appointments for the Nursing Home Board were next up, with Delorse Radtke and Julie Cognetta being selected for the positions. The Elmwood Fire Dept. will be holding their annual fund raising picnic at the fire hall on September 8th and 9th. The Board approved a picnic license and operators licenses for the event. The street on the side of the fire hall will also be closed for the two days.

The Sandbar and Tiffany’s Tavern will be having a street dance on August 25th on Main Street. The street will be closed off for this event. The Board also approved lifting the open container ordinance until midnight. The street will be re-opened by 1 AM.

Trustee Brian Buck then spoke to the Board, asking if there could be a change in dates for September and October board meetings. He is coaching the Hudson JV Team, and will not be available for the regular dates of those meetings. The members discussed this briefly, and decided not to take any actions. The meetings will stay as scheduled.

Trustee Trisha Knops then began a discussion on the needs for a permit and amendment ordinance for “Outdoor Bands”. “This has brought in complaints from the citizens”, she stated. The Board is going to look into creating an amendment for the noise and fencing issues, as well as providing public notice of these events. There will be a modest fee of five to ten dollars for the permit, is what is being speculated at this time. The need for an officer to be on duty will be looked into also. President Bill Stewart added, “This will go for the citizens having yard parties with music as well” The item was tabled, and will be sent back to the Licensing Committee for further review.

Bill Warner was on hand from the Pierce County EDC (Economic Development Center), with Greg Webber from Genesis. The two men spoke to the members of the board. Genesis is adding onto their building, for more production work area, and more warehousing space. The project had already began the day of the this meeting. The South side of the building will need more grading and storm water control, as required by DNR. Warner explained to the members that this would be a modest project with the cost being about $300,000. A request of approx. $44,000 from the Village was the proposal at this time. This will all go towards the TIFF District that has already been created. The communications between the village and the other interested parties has already begun through emails.

Committee and Board Reports followed. Trustee Knops provided a bit more information from the Licensing Committee meeting that was held. There have become some added issues with the ordinance on outdoor activities, and fencing. Owner of the Longbranch, Bob Rupakus has asked that the restrictions be changed for him. Any event outside of the taverns has required a fenced in area, for any alcoholic beverages to be allowed. Rupakus was provided the “OK” by the board to hold a few events for a bean bag game to be played on the side of his bar. This has become a bit of an issue since, being it has been more than a few times, and there have been complaints. The ordinance currently requires that a temp. fence be put up for any temporary events. A permanent fence must be erected for continuous use. Rupakus is questioning the words “Shall and May” in the current requirements, and the board needs to make it extremely clear on how they will go forward with this ordinance, as well as the wording within. President Bill Stewart added, “A business that is right next to the highway, a residential area, and the street that goes directly to the school, needs to be held at a higher standard”. The Committee is going to continue looking for more information from other communities, and will have another meeting to review and enhance the current ordinance. This subject will continue into next months board meeting.

Another area spoken about in the committee meeting was the ordinance that requires the registrations of cats within the village. At this time, the ordinance requires that all cats and dogs be registered. This was changed by the board some time ago, but there is nothing in the books that can be found. A complaint about all the feral cats in town has brought this to the attention of the board once again. This is another issue that will be sent back to the committee, to get it cleared up. If it is decided that the village will not be requiring the registration of cats, then it will be put in writing and added to the ordinance.

Knops continued with the Library Committee report. The meeting was held on July 17th. Eleven applicants provided their information for the Library Director position. Four of those applicants were interviewed on July 24th and 25th. Jeanne Friedell, who has twenty years experience was hired for the position. Casie Lukes was also hired as the Librarian Assistant. “There have been many new updates to our policies”, added Knops. Christy Rumquist has filled this position for the past two months of this process. A big “Thank You” for keeping the Library open was provided by Jeanne Friedell in a phone call, welcoming her to the community.

Trustee Buck the spoke to the board. A lot on Pierce and Woodman was being looked at by a citizen, asking to purchase part or all of it. The Personnel and Finance Committee spoke to the interested party regarding the lot. An estimate was provided to the individual for a partial sale. WALKINS GLEN, NEW YORK - On the Southern edge of Seneca Lake in New York, the Nationwide Series ran their road course race this weekend. A 82 lap event on the 2.45 mile twisted track. The Pole Sitter was # 12 Sam Hornish Jr. Starting second was # 60 Carl Edwards in his first start of the year in this series. In the race are seven cup drivers (Hornish Jr., Harvick, Edwards, Kahne, Lagono, Menard, Keselowski, and Kyle Busch) and three road course ringers (Fellows, Paloubo, and Gonzalez Jr.).

The race started having troubles on the first lap, in corner one. # 20 Ryan Truex locked his brakes up, sliding through the grassy infield. As he re-entered the track sideways, he was hit from behind by # 7 Danica Patrick. She had nowhere she could go, crushing the front end of her race car. This ended her race, as the radiator and engine block were destroyed. On lap 6 the first caution flew for # 19 Alex Popow. A tire went down, and he hit the wall. # 33 Paul Menard began having battery troubles on lap 27. They would need to change the battery three times to complete the race. On the same lap, # 88 Cole Whitt was penalized for running over equipment on pit road. Throughout the race, many cars spun out, and never brought out the caution because they were able to get going again. The second caution flew for # 87 Alex Kennedy on lap 39. He had spun out and then hit the wall. During his spin, # 3 Austin Dillon drove through the inter-loop without stopping. This became a penalty, as you must stop if you take this short-cut.

On lap 56, # 60 Carl Edwards spun out # 18 Joey Lagono just one corner after tagging # 54 Kyle Busch, to move him out of his way. Edwards started showing he was going to be aggressive to get to the lead. Lap 58 was another caution for # 97 Joe Nemechek. His car stalled on track. The fourth caution came out on lap 69, when # 88 Cole Whitt tore up the front of his car in the grass. He was battling with another car for fifteenth position when he ran off track. The fifth and final caution came out for # 3 Dillon when his tire blew, after contact with # 43 Michael Annett. Dillon would fall one lap down for a second straight race, after being the only driver to complete every lap of the season, just two weeks prior.

Edwards was able to hold off a hard charging # 22 Brad Keselowski by pushing him into the wall on the last lap for the victory. The rest of the top ten were: # 12 Sam Hornish Jr., # 6 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., # 5 Ron Fellows, # 54 Kyle Busch, # 38 Kasey Kahne, # 33 Paul Menard, # 31 Justin Allgaier and # 11 Brian Scott.

The next race is Sat. in Montreal, Canada at 2 PM ET

FINGER LAKES 355

WALKINS GLEN, NY - The Cup Series would race 90 laps for race number 22 of the season. The Temperature was a nice seventy-five degrees, with a 30% chance of rain. The Pole Sitter was # 42 Jaun Pablo Montoya for the second week in a row, with # 18 Kyle Busch starting second. Marlee Scott sang the National Anthem, as a C-130 flew over-head. Kirt Manwaring was the Grand Marshal.

Like the Nationwide race, trouble started on lap one for # 55 Brian Vickers. His engine failed, sending him to the garage. On lap 9, # 34 David Ragan got into the back of # 32 Boris Said. This spun Said out, without bringing out a caution. On lap 18, # 49 Jason Leffler went off track, without a caution. Lap 24, # 5 Kasey Kahne was noticing that he had smoke entering his helmet from the AC Unit, so he had to shut it off for the race. The first caution flew for # 1 Jamie McMurray, when he hit the guardrail hard on the drivers side. During the caution, # 51 Kurt Busch had his right rear tire fall off his race car on track, before he got to pit road. # 14 Tony Stewart would have some issues too, when his gasman left the can connected to the car as he left his pit box. Stewart would get a penalty, and go to the back of the field.

On lap 32, Pole Sitter Montoya had his own troubles, as the lower control arm broke. This would send him to the garage. # 20 Joey Lagono also was in the garage with a broken rear shock. On lap 47 Kahne’s troubles continued, as he was tagged with a speeding penalty on pit road. The second caution came out on lap 59, when # 11 Denny Hamlin had an engine failure and fire on track. Another caution came out on lap 64 for # 49 Leffler. His engine failed on track also.

A brief rain sprinkle came over the track on lap 65, but they kept the cars on track. After the re-start, # 14 Tony Stewart spun out, and backed into the wall at the pit entrance. During the restart on lap 73, # 18 Kyle Busch made it three wide in turn one. # 2 Brad Keselowski and # 9 Marcus Ambrose had no choice but to back off, or get crashed by the move. This style of aggressive driving has become regular with Busch as of late. On lap 83, # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. spun out of tenth place, and fell back to twenty-ninth. He also fell from the points lead to fourth in the standings. Teammate # 48 Jimmie Johnson took over the points lead after this race.

# 9 Marcus Ambrose and # 2 Brad Keselowski made it a great finish, as they both got past # 18 Kyle Busch after he spun out on the final lap. The two drivers went back and forth on the last lap, with Ambrose being the leader at the checkered flag. Both drivers came out of their cars, smiling and laughing about the great fun they had beating and banging on one another in that final lap. “That’s what racing is all about” came out of both of their mouths during interviews. Busch left the track without speaking to anyone, as usual when he doesn’t win. There was a report of oil being on the track for the last two laps from the # 47 Bobby Labonte car, as his engine gave up in the end. # 24 Jeff Gordon also spun out on the final laps, and fell from the top ten to twenty-second place.

The rest of the top ten were: # 48 Jimmie Johnson, # 15 Clint Bowyer, # 22 Sam Hornish Jr., # 16 Greg Biffle, # 18 Kyle Busch, # 17 Matt Kenseth, # 78 Regan Smith and # 56 Martin Truex Jr.

The next race is Sunday at Michigan International Speedway at noon on ESPN.

Nascar 2012- race 21

US Cellular 250

NEWTON, IOWA - The Nationwide Series ran their race at the Pocono Race Track. Nearly 56 thousand fans attended the sell-out race. The 7/8 mile track was raced for 250 laps. # 6 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is racing for his fourth straight victory in Iowa. This was the Final “Dash for Cash” race for $100,000.00. A fan will also win a cool $100K as well. The competitors for the cash are Stenhouse Jr., Dillon, Annett and Hornish Jr. There are many young drivers in the field for the race, including # 22 Ryan Blaney, # 20 Darrell Wallace Jr., # 39 Joey Gase, # 18 Michael McDowell and # 99 Brett Moffitt. J.T. Hodges sang the National Anthem, as seven planes from the KC Flight Team flew over. Kathy Hust was the Grand Marshal.

The first 36 laps were lead by rookie Darrell Wallace Jr., before he was caught and passed. A Competition Caution came out on lap 50, due to the track was washed off by rain. The second caution came out on lap 94, when # 44 John Blankenship spun out on track. The third and final caution flew on lap 175 for debris on track.

# 2 Elliott Sadler was able to take control of the race, and took the win. He was black flagged last week in Indianapolis, and felt this was a good redemption for that race being taken away from him by Nascar. Sadler was pushed by Dillon past the leader on the last caution/restart, and was penalized for getting ahead of the leader before the start/finish line. Sadler looked like he was the favorite to win the inaugural race at Indy.

The rest of the top ten were: # 31 Justin Allgaier, # 12 Sam Hornish Jr. (winner of the $100K and fan Tammy Atieri won a $100K), # 43 Michael Annett, # 6 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., # 18 Michael McDowell, # 20 Darrell Wallace Jr., # 30 Jamie Leffler, # 9 Brett Moffitt and # 22 Ryan Blaney. Only 14 cars finished on the lead lap. Both # 7 Danica Patrick (11) and # 70 Johanna Long (13) finished the race on the lead lap.

The next race will be at Walkins Glen next Sat. at 2:30 PM

PENNSYLVANIA 400

POCONO, PENNSYLVANIA - The Sprint Cup Series ran this weekends race at the “Tricky Triangle”. A 160 laps on the 2.5 mile track was scheduled. # 42 Jaun Pablo Montoya won the Pole Position, with # 11 Denny Hamlin starting second. The pre-race ceremonies had Alex Boyd singing the National Anthem, while a F-16 Mustang flew overhead. A Competition Caution was set for lap 20, due to on and off rain before the race. The scheduled time was set back 90 minutes, due to a late storm that moved across the track a half hour before the start time.

Montoya and Hamlin led the early laps, before # 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. showed his strength, taking the lead before the first caution came out on lap 18 for # 18 Kyle Busch. He blew a tire, while driving hard towards the front. Being a bit aggressive on his tires cost him. He hit the wall plenty hard, and went to the garage for repairs. He did return to the race, 23 laps down. On lap 39 # 48 Jimmie Johnson drove to the lead, and showed everyone that he was the car to beat. The Hendrick and Roush cars seemed to be the fastest in the race. On lap 50, Earnhardt Jr. had his transmission fail. He was getting back up to speed after a pit stop, and found he had no fourth gear, then trying to go back into third, found it was gone too. He would go to the garage and start jacking the car up himself. The team changed the transmission and had him back in the race in just 18 laps. Kyle Busch’s troubles were not yet over, when on lap 72 he was caught speeding on exit from a pit stop.

The second caution flew on lap 86 for his brother # 51 Kurt Busch, as he blew a tire and hit the wall with both the rear and front of the race car. His day ended with the wreck. Another caution flew right away on the restart, when # 17 Matt Kenseth attempted and succeeded to get # 48 Jimmie Johnson loose in turn one, by driving very close to his passenger side of the car. Johnson’s car slid up the track into Kenseth. Both cars slid sideways as the field went by. # 16 Greg Biffle was right behind the two, and he slid into the wall while braking. As Kenseth came away from the wall, he turned sideways in front of # 11 Denny Hamlin. The two cars came together, destroying Hamlin’ car, and doing heavy damage to the drivers side of Kenseth.

The race would never get another chance to start, due to a Severe Thunderstorm that moved over the track. A red flag came out first, and ten minutes later, Nascar called it a race. On lap 99 # 24 Jeff Gordon was the leader after the caution flew, and became the winner of a rain shortened race. This was Gordon’s first victory of the year, and put him the second wild card spot for the upcoming Chase for the Championship.

The rest of the top ten were: # 5 Kasey Kahne, # 56 Martin Truex Jr., # 2 Brad Keselowski, # 14 Tony Stewart, # 39 Ryan Newman, # 99 Carl Edwards, # 15 Clint Bowyer, # 78 Regan Smith and # 9 Marcus Ambrose.

Even after the troubles Dale Earnhardt Jr. had, he still kept the points lead going to Walkins Glen next Sunday.

Note- A fan was killed at the race track after being hit by lightning. Please say a prayer for the family.
